Claudetteia Love, a Carroll High School student and the subject of a national civil rights debate, has official permission to attend the prom on April 24, wearing a tuxedo as she wanted, but she's not sure she will go.

Monroe City Schools Superintendent Brent Vidrine said Tuesday the school's principal Patrick Taylor and Board President Rodney McFarland met with Love and her mother to discuss the school's prom dress code.

"The policy was reevaluated and students will be allowed to wear the formal wear of their choice to the prom," Vidrine said.

As written, the dress code specified that girls must wear prom dresses and boys wear tuxedos.

Love, who is openly gay, said last week that when she learned that she could not wear a tuxedo to the prom, she decided not to go.

"This was never an issue of anything other than a dress code policy," Vidrine said.

"As a school district, we want each and every child in our district to have a great experience both in school and extracurricular. We constantly evaluate our policy and procedures to maintain that positive experience for all of our students."

After the news of Love's decision not to attend the prom broke Friday on Thenewsstar.com, organizations and citizens both locally and across the country came out in support of Love.

Tuesday, Love's mother, Geraldine Jackson said Love is unsure now whether she will attend the prom.

"Even this morning she was sitting there crying," she said. "I'm not satisfied with the apology. My child is still hurting."

Vidrine said the formal wear policy will stand for all high schools in the district.

"I met with them and the issue was resolved," McFarland said, although plans are still underway for a news conference by the school board on Wednesday.

In addition to serving as board president, McFarland is a minister. "I haven't been able to sleep through all of this," he said. "There has been a lot of pressure on me, wearing two different hats. Some people are having trouble separating the two."

Carroll High School's prom is April 24.
