Molten metals

Metallic make-up might sound like a look best left at high school proms but it isn’t all silver lipsticks and electric blue eyeliner. At Donna Karan and Emporio Armani, a dusting of silver shadow around the eyes created a prettier alternative to a traditional smoky eye.

For a more luminous look like the one shown here at Rodarte a chocolate shade of bronze was applied to the entire lid and glitter dusted on to the lips over lipstick.

The trend is surprisingly versatile; a light dusting of silver or gold can work as subtle shimmer for daytime. To make the look more eveningwear appropriate simply increase the intensity of application. Shades of metallic can be selected based on skin tone for more flattering effect: for darker tones bronze and golds work best; lighter complexions should stick with silvery hues.

Smells like teen spirit

Nineties-inspired beauty looks have been around for several seasons thanks to runway shows from the likes of Saint Laurent and Chanel. The dark moody colours typical of the grunge look made famous by the likes of Courtney Love are now setting the scene for nails, too.

Dark Elderberry was the colour of choice at Burberry Prorsum. The Chanel polish for this season, which is almost always a sellout and thus a barometer of trends is Orage, a heady mix of navy and very dark grey.

For those who never like to stray far from classic red, try berry shades. For an extreme look try black polish, however, remember to invest in premium brands to avoid polishes that can stain the natural nail, a look best reserved for Halloween

Back to basics

With normcore the buzz word in fashion this season, it’s no surprise that this everyday, anti-trend has translated to hair, too with conservative styles setting the scene.

Good news for those who like the laissez-faire attitude to hair care, because there’s no need for professional help in getting this look. At shows including Miu Miu, Burberry and Chloé, the hair was simple; barely styled, with minimal product and a natural finish.

For a slightly more stylised look, the ponytail is a good compromise. At Richard Nicoll models wore hair in a low pony tail and for added detail the hair was finished with a lock wrapped around the hair tie.

“I wanted the hair to balance out as more modern with casual nonchalance and cool,” said Duffy, Vidal Sassoon’s global ambassador who created the look.
